With the introduction of the Garmin S1 Golf GPS watch we decided to review the Garmin golf watch and compare it with the Award winning handheld Shotmiser G500 Golf GPS. Our review leaves no doubt that the Garmin S1 is more convenient than a standard handheld GPS Unit but apart from this we could not find any other advantages.

The Garmin golf watch has basic functionality giving standard distances to the front, middle and back of the green. This plus the convenience factor makes the S1 golf watch suitable for the casual golfer. However, serious golfers will struggle to significantly lower their scores without any indication of distance to hazards, without stats to help game analysis and without a visual course map or touch screen distance to any point functionality.
Not only does the Shotmiser GPS give serious golfers the standard distance information but touch screen colour course maps show the distance from and to any point using PTP (Point To Point) Technology.
Good golfers will use the touch screen to check distances to hazards, plan shots to leave a favourite distance for a shot to the flag and to recover back to the fairway from stray drives, leading to lower scores. The clear graphically mapped course images mean you see on screen exactly what is in front of you which enables you to visualise the next shot. You can review game stats at any time to learn from and subsequently improve your golf.
Not content with these advantages, Shotmiser want to make the handheld unit as convenient as a Garmin golf watch so the Shotmiser GPS special offer includes a free trolley mount.
Today's Golfer have just published the results of their golf GPS review tests and whilst the Garmin S1 golf watch was praised for its convenience they also said that “You`d be better off with a handheld device with a bigger screen if you want more detail”
In our opinion the major difference between the two is value for money; at around £20-£30 difference the feature packed Shotmiser G500 is a clear winner. See our comprehensive golf GPS comparison table. Today's Golfer agreed awarding it the prestigious Best Value Golf GPS accolade.
